Teen Therapy in Oakville

Is your teen withdrawing, anxious, or struggling at school? Our therapists specialize in adolescent mental health, providing a confidential space for your teen to feel heard and develop real-world coping skills.

Teen therapy is psychotherapy specifically tailored to the developmental, emotional, and social needs of adolescents aged 13 to 18. The teenage years bring unique pressures — academic stress, social media, identity exploration, peer dynamics, and family conflict. At Oakville Therapy by Counselling & Co., our registered therapists understand the adolescent brain and use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, and motivational interviewing to help teens develop emotional regulation, healthy coping strategies, and self-advocacy. Sessions are confidential and available in-person in Oakville or via secure virtual video across Ontario.

Our Approach

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) adapted for adolescents — addresses anxious thoughts, avoidance patterns, and low mood
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills — builds distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness
  • Motivational interviewing — empowers teens to explore their own motivation for change without pressure
  • Identity-affirming therapy — supportive exploration of gender, sexuality, values, and self-concept
  • Safety planning and crisis support — structured protocols for teens experiencing self-harm or suicidal ideation

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my teen’s therapy sessions be confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is essential for building trust with your teenager. We share general themes and progress with parents during periodic check-ins, but specific session content remains private. The only exceptions are situations involving safety — risk of harm to self or others, or abuse. We establish clear confidentiality boundaries with both the teen and parents at the outset.
My teen doesn’t want to go to therapy. What should I do?
Adolescent reluctance toward therapy is very common and does not mean therapy won’t help. We recommend framing therapy as a supportive resource, not a punishment. Many teens who are initially resistant find therapy valuable once they build rapport with their therapist. We can also do an initial phone call with parents to strategize the best way to introduce therapy to your teen.
What is the difference between teen therapy and adult therapy?
Teen therapy accounts for the unique developmental stage of adolescence — including brain development, identity formation, peer influence, and the need for autonomy. Our therapists use approaches adapted for teenagers, incorporate the family system where appropriate, and create a space that respects your teen’s growing independence while keeping parents informed at an appropriate level.
Do you help teens with self-harm or suicidal thoughts?
Yes. Our therapists are trained in safety assessment and crisis intervention. If your teen is experiencing self-harm or suicidal thoughts, we provide structured support using evidence-based approaches including safety planning, DBT skills training, and collaborative assessment. If immediate safety is a concern, please contact 911 or Crisis Services Canada at 1-833-456-4566.
Can my teen attend virtual therapy sessions?
Yes. We offer secure, PHIPA-compliant virtual therapy sessions to teens across Ontario. Many adolescents prefer the comfort and privacy of attending from their own space. Virtual sessions are equally effective for most teen mental health concerns, and our therapists are experienced in engaging teens through video.
