EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987 that uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — to help the brain reprocess traumatic or distressing memories. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends EMDR as a first-line treatment for PTSD (WHO Guidelines, 2013; updated 2023). At Oakville Therapy by Counselling & Co., our EMDR-trained Registered Psychotherapists use the standard 8-phase protocol to treat PTSD, C-PTSD, anxiety, phobias, and other conditions rooted in distressing experiences. Sessions are available in-person in Oakville and via secure virtual sessions across Ontario.
Our Approach
- Standard 8-phase EMDR protocol — history-taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, re-evaluation
- Bilateral stimulation — guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones to activate the brain's natural processing system
- Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model — targets the root memory networks that drive current symptoms
- Resource Development and Installation (RDI) — builds internal coping resources before processing begins
- Integration with other modalities — combined with Brainspotting, somatic approaches, or EFT when clinically appropriate
What to Expect
- A free 15-minute phone consultation to discuss whether EMDR is right for your situation.
- A thorough history-taking and preparation phase (typically 1-3 sessions) to ensure you feel safe and ready.
- Processing sessions (50 minutes) where you focus on specific memories while following bilateral stimulation.
- You remain fully conscious and in control throughout — EMDR is not hypnosis.
- Most clients report noticeable reduction in distress within 3 to 6 processing sessions.
